Driving lessons, can someone help?
I want to start taking driving lessons but can’t afford to pay a professional instructor. I’ve asked my cousin to help me out with this. Can someone please tell me what is required when I go for my test? Will I be asked to go on dual carriageways at more than 30mph? I’m a little scared I won’t be able to deal with very busy roads. I want to know a little more about what manoeuvres are involved and how to deal with them, for example the emergency stop.

Yes you will have to go on dual carriageways and maintain whatever the speed limit is for the road if safe to do so. That will be 60 mph on some duals and single carriageways. You will be required to drive in a town centre or even a city centre depending on where the test is and some of it will be busy. You will have to demonstrate the ability to complete several manoeuvres including the emergency stop, 3 point turn and parallel parking. You will be expected to show and tell where things are on the car used for the test like where to fill the engine oil and where to fill the washer bottle to name just 2.
No one is going to be able to type out on here what the whole thing needs.
Unless you have an instructor who knows the test routes used, the full standard of competency needed etc you do not have a prayer of passing the test.
The Driving Standards Agency for the UK has done a survey and found out that on average when passing the test candidates have had 45 hours of real lessons with a qualified instructor and 22 hours extra practice with a freind or relative – you are not going to get the 45 hours, or more or less for you, other than paying someone to teach you. If you cannot afford an instructor then you ain’t gonna pass and you would not be able to afford to run a car if you did so why bother.
